Basics of Ventilation

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The use of mechanical ventilation is becoming more widespread as the acuity of patients in high dependency areas increases and patients with chronic health conditions make the transition out of critical care environments. It is important that nurses caring for these patients have a sound understanding of principles and practices of ventilation in order to provide effective care.

This half day workshop is designed to ensure that nurses caring for these patients have a sound understanding of principles and practices of ventilation in order to provide effective care.

Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the respiratory system physiology as it relates to breathing and gas exchange
  • Outline some common disorders, both acute and chronic that may require mechanical ventilation
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of mechanical ventilation and compare these with normal respiratory functioning
  • Describe commonly used ventilation modes, parameters and settings
  • Outline the key aspects of nursing management of the ventilated patient.
