As a professional you will deal with many problems that are not clearly defined. Quite often these problems are related to professional behaviour or clinical competence and they are often borderline issues. It is sometimes difficult to either prove or disprove competency.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:
- Understand how to assess or evaluate competence
- Develop effective strategies to assess the competence of an individual
- Understand the difference between clinical error or misconduct
- Determine the seriousness of the problem
- Identify the steps to take to escalate the issue if necessary
This workshop is designed to meet the needs of all registered nurses and midwives. Competency is an issue that is particularly relevant in the increasingly complex health sector of today. Junior managers and experienced registered nurses and midwives will find that many of the issues raised are issues that they would have faced in their daily work environment. This workshop allows them to think about such issues within a framework that assists them to explore the appropriate issues and take the appropriate action.
The workshop consists of short presentations, group work and case studies.
Participants receive a workbook, copies of case studies, and references for further reading.
