- Strategies for developing a learning culture for Nurses and Midwives
- Principles of Adult Learning
- Developing education sessions & workshops
- Evaluating learning outcomes
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:
- Have an ppreciation of the principles of adult learning and its application to work based learning
- Plan and present sessions to meet learning needs of the staff
- Learn how to foster a quality learning culture in the workplace
- Have an understanding of the role of critical reflective practice in education
The workshop consists of short presentations, group work and activities. Scenarios from the workplace will be used to make the learning meaningful and appropriate for the participant. The workshop is divided into five topics:
Role of the nurse educator and clinical facilitator
It is important for each group to understand their roles and how they contribute to nursing/midwifery practice development within the organization and the profession.
Strategies for developing a learning culture for nurses and midwives
The concept of a learning culture in organisations and among professionals is often misunderstood and undervalued. During this session the learning culture concept is discussed and simple (within budget) development strategies are explored.
Principles of Adult Learning
The nurse educator and clinical facilitator must be cognizant of how adults learn. They need to develop an appreciation of the wide range of experiences and perspectives that the adult learner brings to any instructional setting and be able to facilitate connections between the learning objectives and activities and the learner's workplace. Adult learning and "making the connections" will be work-shopped.
Developing education sessions and workshops
The initial steps of a learning needs assessment, identifying stakeholders and other issues that impact on learning needs of an individual, a group and/ or an organisation are discussed. Designing an education session/workshop and delivery of a micro-teaching lesson by each participant, makes this a very practical hand-ons session.
Evaluation of learning outcomes
The process of evaluating immediate, short term and long term learning outcomes is discussed and participants will complete the workshop having designed an evaluation tool.
